“Home, In So Many Words”
Hadassah, January 2007

When our parents are alive, they keep hold of the past. After they die, we have to find a way to do it ourselves. I set out to help save Yiddish, “the linguistic homeland of a people without a home,” and find my own way home.

“Honoring the Everyday: My Daughter's Yidishe Bat Mitzvah”
Bridges, Spring 2000; Utne Reader, March/April 2002

By studying Yiddish in preparation for her bat mitzvah, my daughter honored the everyday lives of her foremothers. Her ceremony affirmed that the daily tasks of keeping house and making a living deserve a place of honor in our history, alongside the actions of famous men.

"Beautiful Hills of Brooklyn"
Winner of numerous awards and qualified for an Academy Award nomination. See www.beautifulhillsofbrooklyn.com. Starring veteran actress Joanna Merlin, adapted from Ellen Cassedy's award-winning one-woman play. A transcendent story of an elderly woman confronting the changes in her life and her beloved Brooklyn neighborhood. Based on the journal of Jessie Singer Sylvester, the story is told in her words -- a quiet life, largely hidden from view, full of undiscovered riches. Making his feature film debut, international stage director Ragnar Freidank captures Jessie's remarkable inner life with a spare beauty and lyrical grace that resonate far beyond the limits of her world. Flowing verses of Walt Whitman make a surprising appearance.
